Comment: on some overclocking websites i read that the amd duron 1.6 is actually an athlon xp with 192 kb of is cache disabled and you can easily turn it into an athlon xp 2600. is it true? if so how do u do it? also what value motherboard would be suitable for the "hacked" duron?

Reply: (edit)I have read that if you simply reconnect the L2 bridge, you can transform a 266FSB Duron/Applebred into a 266FSB Athlon XP/Tbred. Sometimes it works, sometimes it causes instability...you won't know til you try. A 1.6GHz Duron won't become a 2600+ though, it will become a 1900+. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20030908004407.html ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP1

Reply: (edit)The problem is that there might be a reason the other part of cache had been disabled. For example it might be faulty but after the disable the other half was good. In that case the changed cpu will be unstable. But if you use a pencil for connecting those bridges you can easily use an erazer to set it back to the original setting. But also there might have been a shortage of that Duron CPU so some of the good Athlon XP had been changed into Durons. If you got one of those that may work!!!
