Is AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with SIS 640 mobo better for overclocking or P4 1.8 Ghz with SIS 645 mobo/650 mobo.

all you meantion are chipsets. the 6** series are for P4 and the 7** series is AMDs. it depends on the mobo for overclocking features.

Pentiums are better for overclocking.

Athlons can be slightly overclocked, but they run so hot it is difficult to get much more out of them.

Buy a cpu you WANT, spend the money on the fastest you can get, and then you won't need to overclock. You will end up spending more money on cooling solutions if you buy a cpu and immediately oveclock. It will be a waste of money that could have been spent buying the cpu you actually wanted!

I agree what you said xxFrancisxxxUSA.
overclocking you will spend more on cooling solution.

WHAT?....Pentiums are better for overclocking?????? Im not going to touch it. Oh yes I will.....The best way to overclock a cpu is to unlock the multiplier. Not the FSB. Ulock a P4 Multiplier and get back with me on how fast you got it to go.

Well, pentiums run cooler. I have an Athlon, and the heat thing is an issue.

Like I said. When buying a cpu, overclocking shouldn't be a factor. Spend what you need to to get the cpu you want initially.

Well, you cannot unlock A p4, but overclocking the 1800 is not that good. Overclocking the 2000+ or above will get better results. My 1800 I can only get about 1.975 stable. I have seen the 1600+ go alot higher. But other than that, If you dont understand how to Unlock the Athlon, you can destroy the chip.

Sure you can destroy the chip....Just as you can destroy the chip and Memory just by upping the FSB. Its a risk. Do I recommend overclocking for beginners? No. And not all chips are the same. One might be able to overclock higher while the next person with the same setup might not. And 1800+'s do well at overclocking when you unlock the multiplier. Not upping the FSB only. As for as heat is concerned. Of course it could be a problem. WITH ANY OVERCLOCKED CHIP. Intel included. Just buy a heatsink that is rated for the new overclocked speed.

Still say overclocking a P4 is easier on the cooling front.

It is so wierd, you know. This morning my cpu was booting up at 32 degrees. Yesterday, it was 40 something. Temperature is totally dependant on room temperature, but I never realised HOW relevant that was!

it was freezing cold this morning, yesterday it was warmer.

I have an XP 1800+ and I OC'd it up to about 1.7 with a stock sink and 30cfm 60mm cpu fan and no case fans. It worked and was not overheating.

I'm all against doing anything to intels. To me they're the lazy man's computer. If you want something that will give you performance AMD is the best.

And as for your mobo just get one that can support w/e you get.

Hey is the discussion finished ?? I'd like tu put my arguments too :)

I read about some posts in this forum and I saw many opinions about AMD or Intel. Here's what I say about that.

Since many months, Pentium 4 clock grows very fast ! It's why they are so popular. Intel got a good place in the home market for that. For AMD, they have fans (people), the people who likes performance at a low price. Each company has a place in the market. So why one would be better than the other ? Why AMD should always build "hot" processors ? They can change with the time. Intel doesn't have to make the fastest clock processor. It's just the market. Don't try to say which is the best. For some reason people will buy AMD, for other it will be Intel. For many people, they just don't know what processor is on their computer.

In my case, I had a 286 for 1 year and a half and I decided to buy a new computer. When I went to the store, they had a good price for a 366 celeron. I didn't chosse to buy an Intel, I just didn't know what was the difference with the celeron and the Pentium III. Since that, I upgraded my processor to a celeron 533 (max for the motherboard). I changed my motherboard after that to another one with the 370 socket. It's why today I have a PIII 1 GHz. I like it, it works well in games and for applications. And I will continu to buy Intel because it satisfied me until now.

The moral of this text is that people who had bad experiences with the AMD changed to Intel, and in the other way too. Just take it easy and don't try to convince others that you have the good opinion. We all have our points.

Finally, I can say my point :) I have a computer that runs 24/7 and is in my bedroom (I'm a student, I got few space hehe) and in summer it's very very very hot in there. 2 years ago I saw the new computer of my friend: A Athlon 800 MHz. When he was pushing the power putton, it was a plane !!! There was wind behind the computer lol ! I knew that it was because it has to be cooled more than my celeron 533. It's why I always thank that AMD = hot and I won't use a AMD until I get a room for my computer only :) That's my point.
