Hi, I was wondering if i could get a little help.
I have today upgraded my PC with a new dual-core AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ CPU. I have installed WinXP Pro 32bit, and all is running fine other than the dual-core. It is only reporting 1 core at 1.8 ghz, which is now slower than my previous cpu 2.8ghz!!! I have updated all drivers and am now at a standstill at what to do, can anyone help me? I am ok with PCs, but am self taught and this is a very new area for me.
Thanks alot

It would help to know the make/model of your board & the rest of your system specs.
Drivers have nothing to do with CPU speed, the clock settings are configured by the BIOS. Are you sure your board supports the X2 4200+?
Was your old CPU at 2.8GHz a single core? Did you overclock to get to that speed or is that the deafult? There are very few single core AMD's that run at 2.8GHz...either the LE-1660 or a few high end FX series CPUs. In many cases, the single core 2.8GHz will beat the dual core 2.2GHz so unless you have a need for dual core, you could almost call this CPU swap a downgrade.
Check your BIOS settings & make sure the CPU is clocked at 11 x 200MHz. Also, make sure Cool 'n' Quiet is disabled.

Hi thanks for your assistance.
My board is Asus A8V-E SE, AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual-core processor socket AM2, 1GB ram.
Can confirm cool n quiet is disabled, current FSB Frequency is 200 Mhz.
CPU type in CMOS is saying AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+, but I have definately bought a dual-core 4200+ ???

Are you sure it's AM2? According to ASUS, it's S939. Make sure you have the latest BIOS & double check that the CPU multiplier is set to x11, not AUTO.
