This can be a mixed reaction depending upon how you are viewing this.
The only noticable diff at first that will catch your eye is the price and how it's 110 dollars more then the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ which is only 200mhz slower then the Athlon 64 X2 6000+. Dig a little deeper and you will notice that the Multiplier on the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ is unlocked unlike the Athlon 64 X2 6000+. Now the 110 dollar more price tage starts to become more interesting, because instead of being limited to 3.3ghz like with the Athlon X2 64 6000+ with the locked Multiplier, you can now be able to reach clock speeds of upwards to 3.7ghz stable. It may sound crazy but people that have bought these processors say that they are able to do it with just a little voltage increase and a decent air cooled system.
Now the question is, is it still worth the extra 110 dollars over the Athlon 64 X2 6000+? It does yeild a 28% performance advatange over an overclocked Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at 3.3ghz, but even with that said i'd have to say no. The Phenom X2/X4 series processors are right around the corner and will be a better if not a lot better in overall performance then the Athlon 64 X2 series. Not to mention, anyone with an AM2 motherboard plus a bios update will be able to put the Phenom X2/X4 series processor in their system with no problem.
Summary: AMD has stated that the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2ghz, 1mb L2 cache per core will be the end of the line for the Athlon X2 processor family. The price for the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ when it’s released will ...
