I am building a pc and I was wondering something. An AMD 64 has HTT and its effective fsb is 1 Ghz. Is that the true FSB (i know it doesn't have a real fsb). Does this mean that in theory it could handle RAM with speeds of 1 Ghz (ex: DDR1000 in theory) So if I overclock my RAM as high as it goes, my processor wouldn't need to be overclocked to handle the speed increase? Or does it still utilize a 200Mhz core clock?

Okay I solved it myself... turns out that the FSB is at 200 and is multiplied by 5 which equals 1000.

HTT has nothing to do with memory speed. HTT is for the connection for all the devices in your computer to the processor not including memory. The ram uses a memory controller found on the cpu which is seperate of the HTT and as you found out yourself it runs at 200mhz. Depending on the athlon64 you have it either is 64bit memory controller or 2x64bit. 64bit offers 3200mb/s and other is 6400mb/s. Ram at DDR @ 200mhz x 2 offers is also 64bit and also offers 3200mb/s but if run in dual mode offers 6400mb/s. Therefore overclocking your fsb which = 200mhz will increase bandwidth efficency and overclocking ram with it will increase total bandwidth.

With socket939 you have the 128bit dual
channel connection but it's only used if
you have 2 or 4 identical sized ram modules
in the correct slots.

If you raise the FSB the cpu gets faster
and the ram clock will also raise at the
same percentage depending on the base speed
you set.
You also need to adjust the HTT multiplier
because the HTT bus will not run much
faster than the original speed (1000MHz at
socket939).

For OCing my 3000+ winchester to 2700MHz
(50%) I set the ram back to 266MHz and
together with the 50% OC I'm back at 400MHz
Ram speed. The HTT multiplier is at 3x at
that speed!
