Comment: I'm getting the "AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 939 1MB Toledo Dual-Core CPU" Tomorrow and I was simply wondering what I should do to prepare. I read over the net about a "Hotfix" to make it more stable durring game play (I don't play many games other then CS:S) Also smoother durring regular use of apps (which is what I want) Before someone posts this, I've already tried OCing it but I couldn't get it past 2.1ghz and I got this cheap so I went for it. Abit AN8 Socket 939 AMD64 3000+ @2.0Ghz Corsair 1Gig Dual-Channel 2x512 MSI Radeon x800 PCI-E Seagate 160Gig SATA WesternDigital 80Gig SATA WesternDigital 160Gig SATA Antec TC 2.

Reply: (edit)"I've already tried OCing it but I couldn't get it past 2.1ghz" You couldn't get the 3000+ past 2.1GHz? Depending on which core you have, you *should* be able to get it to 2.25GHz (9 x 250MHz). You'd have to drop the RAM setting in the BIOS from DDR400 to DDR333, disable all Spread Spectrum options, lower the HT multi from 5x to 4x & possibly increase the CPU voltage. EDIT: I forgot to mention that you should lock the PCI-e bus at 100MHz. As for the CPU swap, there's nothing to prepare, just do it. Configure the BIOS settings the 1st time you bootup & check the temps...if all is well, reboot into the OS

Reply: (edit)You may want to make sure that your motherboard will be able to see the X2. S939 motherboards built prior to May of 2005 will need a Bios update.

Reply: (edit)Did you verify the markings on the CPU before you installed it or did you slap it in without looking?

Reply: (edit)The only diff between the Manchester and Toledo version of the X2 4200+ is that the Toledo version has a higher stepping E6 then the Manchester E4. X2 4200+ Toledo version is basicly nothing more then a 4400+ X2 with half its L2 cache disabled, though that's what AMD and Intel like to call it. But in reality those models are really the defective models that didn't pass full testing. I found that out when AMD made another version of the s939 64 3700+ on the Toledo core. It was really no more then a 64 X2 4400+ with one dead core.

Reply: (edit)I am trying to do the same type of upgrade. Single core 3000 to X2 4200 (Newegg $78 including shipping - most excellent) MB MSI K8T neo (6702e) AGP type video. Have already upgrade BIOS to newest version (9.4) supporting dual cores, MSI site shows the X2 4200 to be ok for the MB if BIOS is 9.1 or newer. When I put in new CPU board freezes, won't post. I sent it back hoping it's just DOA. Has anyone tried this on the MSI 6702e MB? Or are there any CMOS settings that I should change for dual core usage? I did try turning on the APIC – didn’t help.
