Hi Gordon,

Let's see...your CPU is a Barton - 512KB - 400 MHZ - 11X multiplier.
I haven't heard of Deluxe ram, so I cannot comment on the particular ram. Have
you tried swapping the ram using one stick at a time?
How is your BIOS configured? Do you have the settings to default or "fail safe settings"? Your motherboard uses the NForce 2 chipset which is ideal for your processor.

Can you give details on your system specs and other hardware installed? That would help pinpoint a problem. List as many details in your BIOS as possible. (memory timings, FSB etc...also voltages, CPU temp etc.)

No, the board is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe

Has the RAM been used before & you know it's good? Or is that new too? If it's new, the 1st thing you should do is run Memtest86 to make sure there are no errors.

Have you tried increasing the CPU voltage (vcore)? It's possible the board undervolts slightly. try these settings:

- change System Performance to "User Defined". This will allow the FSB (CPU External Frequency) to be adjusted in 1MHz increments

- make sure your Memory Frequency is set to 100%...don't use "BY SPD"

- disable both Spread Spectrum settings

- set Graphics Aperture Size to 128MB

- set AGP Frequency to 66MHz

- set CPU Vcore Setting to Menu

- set CPU Vcore to 1.70v

And did you have the same ammount of ram as before ??

Your old processor had a different level of cahce than this one, it does make a difference the jump from 133 fsb to 200 will have an affect on things.

relaod OS after changing CPU?
err...
for what joy?

I have not needed to reload any OS after changing CPU and ram.

If a 3200 is running as a 2500 then its a mobo - cpu problem, nothing to do with the OS.

The OS is started AFTER the BIOS finishes the POST. The CPU will be recognised DURING the POST and BEFORE the OS is loaded.

Thanks to you all for the fast response I have pasted my system info on the end of this. No I did not reload operating system after CPU change never had to do this before? The 3200 run's fine at 166FSB =2500XP The mem is not new and was running fine on 2400XP and is running OK with the 3200 set at 166FSB . The temp is running a constant 40C even loaded up Arctic range CPU cooler 5 inch cooling fan two rear 900mm case fans one 900mm side case one 5 inch front case fan. There is a reason for all the fans we are supposed to be in the sun now not in the UK.the bios size is the 4mb being the deluxe board with latest bios also jumper on board is set to 200FSB. I have not changed the CPU voltage as it is a new CPU and don.t want it to be my fault if there is a problem with it. Hardware I have 3 hard drives two 80 gig 1 and160gig ATI all in wonder TV vid card Sound Blaster card with Live drive and IDE card. As I have said it run's fine at 166FSB CPU temp is 40C.
Thanks again Gordon

The original post said I can get desk top !!

Hence the question on the OS.

Gordon !!

There is a fsb switch next to the cpu socket that controls the fsb recognition !!

have you set that to 200 or is ti still set at deafult ??

There is also a 1008 bios version for you mobo have you installed it ??

God ai hate this server grrrrrrrr

The post was meant to read next to the switch next to the north bridge !!!!

As for the relaod this is darn good idea when doing a big jump on cpus. Diff levels of on board cache, and fsb do make a difference and in can in some instances cause isseus with the os.

Its like HDD when going from 2 meg cache to 8 meg cache drives, ppl have a habit of ghosting os across. But the OS loads and runs much diff. All yu need to do is ahve a look at the page file, and drictory loacations on the diff HDD.

I have the A7N8X-X & I believe it has the same FSB jumper...one position is for 200FSB (100MHz) only...the other position is for 266/333/400FSB.

I think Janos is on to something about the BIOS...if you have an older board & never updated the BIOS, it won't run at 200MHz (400FSB).

Hi Guy's
I got half way through doing a reply at 190 FSB showing 3200XP and it blue screened on me I have turned it down to 180 FSB showing 2500XP?
As for the bios I looked night before last and the latest bios was 1007 for my board being the deluxe 4mb not the 2mb bios. But the 1007 4mb bios is rated to the 3200XP and it is the later board comes 3200XP ready the jumper is set as default for the 3200XP.
It ran for about 10min's before blue screening at a steady temp

I have just looked at the 1008 bios and it seems for the main part it is for the Sempron CPU A7N8X Deluxe BIOS 1008 for PCB revision 2.0 and later only .
My board came set as default with the jumper on the 200FSB for some reason but has been running fine. I have a friend coming over Friday with a CPU and mem so will hope to see witch is playing up.
30mins OK so far at 180FSB

I posted the link to the files several responses back...

Have you tried increasing the CPU voltage like I suggested? 1.70v is only a 0.05v increase over the default of 1.65v. You're definitely not gonna fry anything or overheat with that minor increase, but it may be enough to stabilize the CPU at 400FSB

I am having exactly the same problem. Received and installed the AMD 3200+ on my A7N8X-X M/b and it would not run on 400FSB - kept on rebooting. Previously had the 2400+ CPU installed. Set FSB to 166MHZ [shows 2500+] and runs normally.
I had the latest BIOS Update [1008] installed beforehand. Have 2x 256MHz A-Data DDR400 Ram and 1x 512Mb PC400 Ramos RAM. Took RAM out and swapped around and it made no difference. Jumper setting is 266/333/400FSB [default] Still wondering what the problem is.

As you can see we tried every thing to get the 3200XP to run it would run at 2500XP no problem but running slower than my 2400XP I have 2 gigs ram DDR400.We ended up trying a different CPU 3200XP and it worked fine first time telling us that it was the CPU that was at fault. What ever you do don't run a Windows XP repair CD took hours to get the PC right again afterwards.
Now that I am stuck with the 2400XP for a while any one know how to get a bit more out of it or more out of my ATI ALL IN ONE GRAFICS CARD it has 32megs on board? I am not a gamer but my 4 year old has just found out he can play rallying on the PC come back Engy Bengy or what ever it is called
