Hi everyone. Today I bought a Sparkle 256MB DDR2 6200 AGP graphics card for my Pentium III system.

I popped it in the motherboard and it's working in the old AGP 2x slot. I was tooling around with overclocking and managed to get 440MHz Core and 750MHz memory from 350/530 stock. Coolbits tells me the core wont go any faster but the memory just keeps going. I was wondering if I should try push any further, would 800MHz be achievable with the DDR2? Once I'm done I will probably leave it at 420MHz Core/ 720MHz Memory due to the slow AGP rate but I was just wondering what your thoughts on the memory were.

The GPU temp isn't getting higher than 41*C at idle and about 58*C under load so heat isn't an issue yet. Should I bother going any higher?

This is the card, its based on the NV44A GPU:

Also the motherboard is a Soltek SL-65DVB with a Via Apollo Pro chipset

Thanks.

Given that your sparkle 6200 AGP come with a 64-bit memory interface, I don't think you will get a large performance increase by overclock the memory frequency. You can always push the memory further by adding couple RAM heatsinks to it and see if you can push it further. My 7600gt maxed out at 1500Mhz memory without RAM heatsinks with zalman 700VF-ALCU and got additional 100Mhz increase (1600Mhz) with heatsinks. Again, I think you should focus more on your core than your memory... Have you try to overclock that tualatin of yours?

I agree with TMP-Man. The 64-bit memory interface is gonna hold back the performance. Actually, I'm surprised an 8x card will work in a 2x slot?

What you might wanna do is get the info off one of the memory chips, then find out what it's rated for...that should help you determine a safe max for overclocking it.

Hey TMP-Man, yeah I've overclocked the Tualatin. It's a 1.13GHz P3 and I have it going at 1.27GHz with a 150MHz FSB, this is using a Tualatin adapter too because of the old motherboard.

Hey jam, on the box it said "AGP3.0 8x/4x, AGP2.0 4x/2x" When I got home I realized the system only had AGP1.0 2x\1x but after some reading I found out that If the slot and video card are keyed the same they should be compatible.

Amazingly I was able to play FlatOut2 at 1024x768 on this system about as smooth as the system in my sig. Just proves what the older stuff can do! NFS Underground 2 runs a bit crappy though at 800x600 mostly on low.

I'll check out the memory chips and let you know what they are.

Thanks Guys!

EDIT:
Got the numbers off the chips, but dont know what to do with them:

It is 3.7ns I assume from N2U51216AG-37B? Using 1000 / 3.7 ~ 270 x 2 = 540Mhz DDR mode is what it rated for?

Cool, Thanks guys. I've decided I'll just keep it at stock. It easily does everything I want it to at stock speeds so I may as well just leave it alone. Thanks for your help guys.
