Hi guys currently been messing around with my Sli setup. Been seeing how many more Fps i can gain in Crysis demo. But came to hit a wall with a display driver failed.

But have noticed that this wont happen when I lower Vid mem and raise the Gpu Clock. before i was trying to hit 725Mhz & 1.1Ghz mem :but at this speed the driver would fail.

Now that i have lowered the Vid mem to 900Mhz i can hit 750Mhz plus, Anyone got an idea why this does this, I am running Vista Ultimate 32Bit I have read that it is a Poorly written Vista driver from Nvidia.

First thing you should do is switch back to XP. Or dual boot XP and Vista. You really cant tell the difference from DX10 to DX9.

Yeah, every driver for Vista is crappy. Vista has not matured yet and neither have any of the drivers.

I really wish MS would just bite the bullet and release DX 10 for XP. Vista is crap.

Have you tried this OCing setup in xp???

Of course an 8600GTS SLi config is better than a single 8600GTS. But now that the 8800GT has hit the market, you'd be better off waiting a bit to see what happens to card pricing. The ATI HD3800 will debut soon (less than 2 weeks) & it will support DX10.1. Both the HD3800 & 8800GT will support PCI-e 2.0.

Rather than buying a 2nd 8600GTS, you *may* be better off selling the one you have & replacing it with a better single card. Keep an eye on the prices & make your move when the time is right.

Here's what Tom's Hardware recently had to say about Crysis & the 8600GTS:

"....you should almost abandon the idea of running this game on an 8600 GTS!"

Your probly right that Xp is much better off for the Ocing problem. But I got Vista Ultimate running all the programs i had on Xp pro. But waiting on Evga to do a step-up soon to the 8800GTs maybe ultra depending on my ego that day.

I have ran the game fine with setting on med. just looking to see what setting push the card to get that extra edge outta my already ob-SO-Lite Sli config, But Xmas is right around the corner and i feel a whole new Build coming on. But Wish AMD would throw a wildcard out already.

Here we go again .....

How is a software to blame for a hardware overclock anomaly? I guess any BSOD that happens on a buggered overclock attempt in XP implies XP is crap.

Overclocking is not an exact science, it requires skill & often involve multiple trial & error attempts to fine-tune the setting for best results. In any case -- disappointments or setbacks encountered is not an indication of a software failure. And in this case, Vista is definitely not to blame.

It can, just like being able to do a more stable overclock with Riva tuner than using the Nvidia driver.... AND I didnt think of that before! It all depends on how well the program was written, the drivers, their ability to deal with error correction, etc.

Have you tried using Riva tuner in Vista??? I didn't even think of this before. And How about going to guru3d.com and downloading the beta forceware drivers for nvidia. Have you tried that?

And your SLI setup is about the speed if not a bit faster than an 8800 series GPU. It's perfectly fine, around 10000 3Dmarks in 06 I'm guessing. How far am I off? The 9XXX series is about to come out, I would wait on upgrading till then.

Also I could not get my 8500GT to run stable with the nvidia drivers handling the OCing. My max was about 475 core and 850(425) memory. Using Riva tuner I am able to get a stable 500 core and 1000 memory OC. The max I was able to get was 650 core and 1100 memory.
