Don't rip me for moving this post. I would like answers about the RAM slot, PLEASE. For the sake of laughs, I'll elaborate on how to ruin your RAMs. I was screwing around overclocking this red beast. The new BIOS flash are great for trying, as they give a few choices of multipliers or auto and FSB choices in every increment from 66 through 200 and something plus voltages in .05 increments. As I pushed the limit in each one it would nolonger boot till you cleared CMOS. Unlike my Biostars and Microstars with jumpers my Asus's have two little solder tits you have to short. My briliant idea with flashlight and magnifying glass (some of you are unaware of my poor eyesight) I proceed to solder a reset switch to the solder lands on the Mobo. Then be sure to drizzle a little solder on a few microchips and reboot and walaa. BIOS beeps galore, no graphics, several graphic cards later (as the book said those beeps were vidio memory error) I started checking the RAMs and discovered they were all dead, four slots! I now have three slots that work, but was testing the RAMs in the newest PC and unknown to me one of those white holddown clips came loose on the new one. You should have seen the smoke roll out of that one. So the newest PC melted one 256RAM and the red PC killed three 256RAMs yet the 512 miraculessly started working when I switched it to a different slot. I got the solder off but there is one bad RAM slot on red. If I put anything in it all you get is black screen and beeps. Anybody have an idea how to restore the forth slot? You all have a good laugh and a great day. Thanks for all the help and anymore suggestions. I've been razzed enough so just help on why it all quits when I add a 4th good RAM in the 4th slot, PLEASE?!?!?! ?Possibly from clearing CMOS or the little temporary short by the battery?

correct me if I'm wrong

Download memtest86 and boot that from a floppy disk to test if your RAM are good.. Seems to me like you mess up the 4th RAM slot yourself by solder a reset switch... Some how due to your poor vision, you might solder some pin into the other circuits and cause the problem.... Maybe try raise the I/O voltage from 3.3 to 3.5? (hence increase dimm voltage as well)... Try CL3 instead of CL2??

It's taken a turn for the worse. The CL3 was a good idea, though. After two days running flawlessly on 1024 RAM over clocked abunch this morning it wouldn't turn all the way on. got in to BIOS and set it all back to stock settings. Everytime I tried to boot it went less and less before black screen. Finally NO XP, and NO BIOS. It will only slow video card logo and size for about 4 seconds, then a few lines of POST then goes black. I can no longer access BIOS. Cleared CMOs, changed to tested good RAM, changed to tested good video card, changed to tested good CPU with different heatsink/fan. Unplugged all three ribbon cables from motherboard, uplugged everything off the back except power,mouse/keyboard, and monitor. No luck, never will boot or stay on long enough to get in bios. Makes no beep codes at all untill I force it by removing RAM or CPU. All it does is VideoCard display at powerup, then three seconds of POST , Then goes black screen with tiny white dot flashing in upper left. What NOW??? I could live without the fourth RAM slot. Please make suggestions, I just got this board Used (as-is) two weeks ago. I think it is bad, but would like second opinions or how to fix it. THANK YOU, VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you toasted it. You need a new mobo.

How do you "overclock a bunch" with that board? It has no PCI lock so you have to stay within safe overclock limits or all bets are off. If you have a 66MHz FSB CPU, the safe FSB range is 66-75MHz...if it's a 100MHz FSB CPU, the safe range is 100-112MHz....& if you have a 133MHz CPU, the safe range is 133-150MHz. If you exceed these numbers, the PCI bus goes too far outta spec & you risk damage. Plus you have to consider what your RAM can handle as well. You can't just start increasing the bus speeds & voltages...you need to follow "proper overclocking procedures". If you attack it haphazardly, you're just gonna end up with a pile of dead components, & this pile will be compounded by the fact that you like to drizzle solder everywhere, lol!

YEP, replaced mobo with exact same and all is well. Tulation 1.4 has FSB of 100 so I quit trying at 120 now it's running very well at 1.678 Ghz back at 1024mb ram on cl2. Thanks! FYI, with bios flash FSB appears to to be capable of every incriment from 66 to 200.
