hello. i just bought an AOPEN i855GMEm-LFSII mb. im trying to choose a Pentium M CPU. i was looking at a PM725, but the specs show it is a 478 pin. the mb uses socket 479. can someone tell me if this will work? better yet, does anyone know where i can view a list of the cpus that will fit that mb? ive been to Intel & AOPEN but (to my novice mind) none of the info seems straight forward.

THANKS in advance!

Am not an Intel fan, but I think the 478-pin pentium M processor you're looking it, is a socket 479 CPU less one pin and therefore should work in that AOPEN board.

I'm not an Intel fan either, but that board probably wasn't your best choice. This should explain about the CPU:

True Intel Mobile is 479 pin using Dothan Codename; many so call laptops use regular 478 pin. The Dothan has 2MB of cache.

everything ive read so far indicates that the 478 will fit the AOPEN i855 mb EVEN THOUGH the mb docs spec a 479 socket.

the only problem is that at $200+ for the processor... who wants to take a chance. if anyone has anything additional, please let me know.

There is an s479 to s478 adapter for s479 cpu's to fit on s478 boards, but I havne't seen an adapter that adapts them the other way around (eg. s478 cpu on an s479 mobo).

one of the first followups to this thread suggested i read the article located here:

http://www.custompc.co.uk/custompc/reviews/68728/aopen-i855gmemlfs.html

the article states the following:

"...Both the website and the manual say that the i855GME supports Socket 479 processors, but these are BGA (pinless) chips designed for the industrial PC embedded market, and you can't buy them. What the i855GME needs is a Socket 478 Pentium M..."

another review says they used a Pentium M 725 to test thhe board.

im about ready to throw caution to the wind and order the blasted thing, but i cant reconcile any of the information ive read (and that bothers me).

just for the record...

this is a reply to a thread i started on AOpen's forum:

"The motherboard uses socket 479 to take both Banias(479) and Dothan(478) processors. The dothan's 478 pins can fit on it well."

thank you for all your effort and information. i guess ill take the plunge with the m725.
