I have a quick question, I picked up an old computer for my mom, she's 76, and set it up with fresh hd, mem, dsl, etc. because she started taking computer classes. Is there a way I can overclock this old thing? BTW, this is a generic big ol machine.

Thx!

Gosh! I don't even have that much memory on my 2600+, but it'd be nice to know what motherboard and CPU is in there.

A good tool you can download is Everest Home Edition if you don't feel like cracking the PC open to see what's inside.

I would think that a 366 MHZ processor with that much RAM would do all that she would want!!!!!
I doubt that she is into the latest and greatest games!!!!!!!!

You want your mom to have a positive computing experience. Overclocking is an imperceptible improvement at the risk of instability, and my advice is do not overclock her machine. I have two of my kids' machines underclocked. Stability is way more important than ghz for 99% of computer users.

You're right. I was just wondering about it being that it was so old, I thought maybe a little tweak might give it a little boost, but conversly sometimes that little boost might be the one to put it over the edge.

Thanks to all!

I have a quick question to add that's driving me absolutely crazy on her hard drive. For some reason, I cannot get the CHKDSK to operate/perform at boot up. Apparently this has become some sort of requisite, and until I can do this, I cannot get her disk to defrag, and CHKDSK will not perform its task at boot up no matter what I do. I have gone into virtual DOS and run the CHKDSK /f, and through the C:\, Properties, Check Disk, etc, but still I cannot get the CHKDSK to do its thing. This is a fresh install on the new 160 gig hd I installed for her. You guys seem extremely knowledgeable, any pointers?

Thank you all immensely!!
