Model/Manufacturer: SELF BUILT
Comment:
Hi everybody I have an issue while trying to install windows xp on my system
I keep getting a BSOD IRQL NOT EQUAL OR LESSER I contacted intel and they told me that my ram bus was faster than my cpu fsb
and that was the problem

But i just installed vista no problem
and so i have to wonder is it a driver issue or the bus issue
being my Q6600 is rated at 1066
my system seems to state that my PATRIOT DDR3 RAM 1333mhz PC-10666 is 1066 ?
I am using the intel mobo DX38BT
using the latest bios and such I built this system for speed
where am i going wrong?

"I contacted intel and they told me that my ram bus was faster than my cpu fsb"

Exactly. You need to be aware that Intel's advertised FSB speed is 4x the actual frequency & RAM's advertised bus speed is 2x the actual frequency. So when you see an Intel CPU listed as 1066MHz FSB, divide by 4. And if you see RAM listed as DDRxxxx, divide by 2.

In other words, your 1066MHz CPU runs at 266MHz, your DDR3-1333 RAM runs at 666MHz. The RAM bus is 2.5 times faster than the CPU bus.

For best performance on a Core 2 based system (Duo or Quad), the CPU & RAM frequecies should run in sync (1:1 ratio). DDR2-800 is all that's really necessary. Even then, DDR2-800 would have to be underclocked in most cases, unless you're overclocking the CPU. Considering the bus speeds of current CPU's, now is not the time to jump on the DDR3 bandwagon. DDR3 latencies are way too high right now & the default DDR3 bus speeds far outpace current CPU bus speeds. You could have saved yourself a good chunk of change by getting a board based on the P35 chipset & DDR2-800 RAM.

Anyhow, you should manually configure your RAM to run at 266MHz (DDR533) to match your CPU.

BTW, test your RAM with memtest86 to make sure there are no errors.
