1st of all, you'll wanna get PC3200 or better for overclocking, PC2700 is just gonna hold you back.

The advantage of having an unlocked CPU is that you can lower the multiplier & raise the FSB even higher, while still keep the overall CPU clock speed within reason.

Two things you need to know...

1. Most Bartons max out at about approx 2300mhz (some lower, some higher)

2. Higher FSB = higher performance

If your 2800+ was locked, the multiplier would be stuck at 12.5x...to get to 2300mhz, you'd have to set the FSB at 184mhz. But with an unlocked multiplier, your have dozens of possible combinations to play with. Here's a few just to give you an idea:

11.5 x 200mhz
11.0 x 210mhz
10.5 x 220mhz
10.0 x 230mhz

All the above are roughly the same clock speed, but the last one would be fastest because of the higher FSB. But to be able to hit 230mhz/460 FSB, you'd need at least PC3700 RAM

thanks for that, but i would need a new mobo and ram so i might do that in future but as for now would i be able to run the cpu faster without changing the fsb as my ram is only pc2700 thanks, over here there is about a £25 thats about $45 difference between the 2800+ and the 3000+ as they both run at 333 could i run my 2800+ safely at 3000+ by changing the multi? and is it worth it? the price would certainly suggest so. thanks!

You won't gain a hell of a lot by overclocking the CPU via the multiplier alone. If you want noticeable performance gains, FSB increase is the way to go.

PC2700 can handle some overclocking. I'd bump up the RAM voltage to 2.7v, set the FSB at 175mhz, the multiplier at 12.0x, & see what happens...
