If I was to buy an AMD mobile Barton 2500+, and wished to overclock it, how critical is the type of memory used?
I'd be happy with a mild overclock to a 3200+ (2.2GHz 400MHz FSB) maximum, which I am led to belive the 2500mobile will do comfortably. Currently I have a 512mb stick of crucual pc2700ddr, I need more ram anyway but another 512mb stick of crucial pc2700 is £75-£85, for £129.19 I could have some Geil dual channel PC3200 ddr value ram from:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/GeIL_Value.html

(Top of page)

Is this good memory for what I want? I've noticed that some dual channel pc3200 goes over £200??? (way over memory budget)

Will this ram (or even my existing ram) be ok for overclocking bearing in mind that i'd rather not start fiddling around overclocking ram if possible. Processor, ok but I'm gonna limit myself to that.

can I put the geil memory in with the crucial memory,(1.5Gig) or will the old ram slow it all down?

Is my cooling system ok for overclocking:

Regular cheapo ATX case.
Coolermaster Aero7-Lite (Processor cooler)
Artic Silver 5
2x80mm coolermaster case fans (one sucking in form lower front, one blowing out upper back)
a PCI slot mounted exhaust fan mounted under graphics card.
a thermaltake copper Geforce4 heatsink and fan on graphics card + artic silver 5
Akasa twin-fan HDD cooler.
Akasa solid copper memory heatsink.

Thanks.

P.S is the 2600-m worth the extra money??

hard to say anything without knowing your existing mobo and cpu.

Go ahead and overclock your cpu to its ghz limit with low fsb and then its fsb limit with low ghz and post back. There is a good chance you already own the fastest setup you can have.

With the XP2200+?

Wouldn't the 512mb L2 cache on a barton chip come in useful for a performance boost?

So if my current memory is pc2700 (333MHz) then am I restricted to overclocking to a 333MHz FSB?

Thanks for your help.

about 50-100 rating points.

"So if my current memory is pc2700 (333MHz) then am I restricted to overclocking to a 333MHz FSB?"

that depends how high your memory can go. You would not be the first guy to get 400mhz out of his pc2700.

It really depends what chips are in that PC2700 memory. I can get 400mhz easily with my PC2700 with 2-2-2-5 @ 2.8v. What is the product name, and if you can read the chips, what are the chips.

It also really depends on how high of an overclock you want, and at what timings.
You can get 2x512mb of Corsair Valueram for $175 which will give you something like 2.5-3-3-6 timings at 400mhz. Don't expect to get higher than 400mhz though.

Memory timing doesn't make that much difference...setting them too aggressively may make your system unstable, but as for a noticeable performance boost, you're talking about nanoseconds.

Hey snoop, we tried to explain to you what to do in your other post. If you shell out for a new CPU & RAM, you're gonna be majorly disappointed. Overclock your current setup...I gave you a rough outline of what to do. But don't use the nVidia system utility, change your settings in the BIOS. Make sure to test your system after every change...if it's still stable, take the FSB up a few more mhz & test it again. You may have to play with the CPU multiplier & voltage settings too. Getting the most mhz out of your CPU isn't as important as getting to the highest stable FSB setting...

The 2200+ runs at 1800mhz...here's some suggestions that will keep your CPU at roughly the default speed, but with a higher FSB. Be sure to run your RAM in sync:

13.5 x 133mhz (default)
11.0 x 166mhz
10.5 x 175mhz
10.0 x 180mhz
9.5 x 190 mhz
9.0 x 200mhz

the m 2600 isn't worth the money cuz the whole point of getting the m is to oc and save money, a 2600 is not that much better than a 2500 anyway.

Hey snoop, From someone that overclocks every thing he's ever owned, including an athlon 2200 T, I say throw down the hundred clams for the cpu and see where it leads. Personally, I couldnt get much from the 2200, maybe got it to 2ghz, thats where the barton starts.
Another thing about the 2500 barton m is that the multiplier is unlocked, unlike the Tbird. This would allow u to less agressively time up the FSB and still get the rush your lookin for.

The barton M also runs cooler so you won't need anything fancy to keep the temp down, what you have should work great.

Saying something about stability, the last chip I had was a p4 266, on an Abit IT7 Max-2 clocked to 3.1ghz, no probs other than my sb audigy platinum and sof2 sounded funky once in a while(solved by a restart of the game), I think I should have gotten the 2.6 p4 @400mhz FSB instead of the 2.66 @533mhz fsb, woulda gave me more headroom. I ran this like this for over a year. All day lan party EVERY Saturday. Sold the setup to my best friend, He is running it the same way, And we're still friends..
U can get an M off newegg for Just about $95 skins w/free fedex shipping. I was lookin at the same a couple months ago, but went with the 3200 Athlon 64 since I had a little extra cash, Ive bumped it up (though not too aggresively) got a 48000 aquamark / 22000+ 3dmark 2001 SE scores with an ati 9800 pro. You picked the right M-board, can't go wrong with Abit, and later if u feel u need to get a stick of corsair value ram, I snagged a 512mb pc3200(400mhz) for off zipzoomfly for another $100 skins. Right now they have some for $82.50..... LOL I shoulda waited. Damn!! Big thing is , just watch your temp. Good Luck.
