Hi,
I have a Gateway Solo 9100, which is a Pentium 233 w/MMX, 5 GB HD, 64 MB RAM. I have Windows XP Pro on it, but before you scold me for putting XP on such a slow system, I need XP to connect to my home network. Obviously, it runs somewhat slow, so I'm thinking about upgrading my RAM. I can get a 128 MB (for a total of 192) upgrade for around $40...how much better performance should I expect? Would it be worth the price? I know you obviously can't give me exact numbers, but a general estimation would be appreciated. Thanks!

You’d probably notice improved performance with your RAM upgrade.
Why do you need a WIN XP OS for your home LAN? We run WIN XP, WIN98SE and WIN95B on our home LAN.

Hi man, I have a 200mhz MMX PC, and I used to have 32MB RAM. BTW I have windows 2000, and when I got that stick of 128MB RAM, I was so amazed how much faster and queiter my PC is now. I feel like I bought a 500mhz PC now with that one RAM upgrade. My PC is now running Quake III Arena online with a Geforce2, which was all not possible before the RAM. Get it man, you WILL notice a HUGE difference.

I dont think you need XP on it either, but what ever you want to do. make sure you motherboard can hadle a new stick. also look around some more 40 bucks is a little much for 128

Actually, $40 is too much for 128 mb (SDRAM).
Also, if you are upgrading ram, why not
upgrade to 512 mb? More the ram, the faster
your comp runs.

gateway has three different Solo 9100 models. there are the LS, SE, & XL. they all have 3 memory slots that will take 128MB per slot for a max of 384MB memory. according to the cricial.com website it takes 66MHz SDRAM. i'm not sure if it will take PC100 or PC 133.

1st of all, $40 is way too much for a stick of 128 RAM. BestBuy & Circuit City both have it on sale this week for well under $20 after rebate. At BestBuy it's $13 after rebate for PC133...the PC100 is more expensive though. Either one should be backwards compatible with PC66.
I also question why you're running Windows XP?
Depending on what the chipset is on your MOBO, it may or may not support more RAM. Just because you have 2 or 3 slots, it doesn't mean that you can drop stick of 128, 256 or 512 in each. Many of the older Intel socket 7 chipsets supported either 128 or 256 megs of RAM & only cached 64 megs. The exception is the 430HX chipset which both supported & cached 512 megs. If the board is newer & has a VIA or SiS (aka junk) chipset, it should handle 512 or more. The bottom line is you have to know what your MOBO will support before ya start throwing more RAM at it, you could just be wasting your time & money....

192 is fast but still could need some more. I have xp running with 2 512 sticks of memory and that is fast. I also have xp running on a matching with 384 and that is also fast, but from people who I talk to, get at least 512mb or memory to run xp. Memory is too cheap to having your computer struggle to load a program.
