first, disable your desktop wallpaper, next, create a folder and put all of your desktop icons into it (open it as needed)
reboot in safemode, run scan disk, then defrag.
disable any bells n whistles
*** go into msconfig and disable EVERYTHING except systray *** (very very important for next step)
go into your system properties, and set your swap file *.swp* to zero (no swap file *no virtual memory*) reboot
go back and set the virtual memory to windows or system managed and then msconfig to normal boot. *disable any programs such as ICQ that you may not use everytime you use the computer*
UNINSTALL ** DIVX!!!!!** You dont actually need it with the windows media updates and to be frank, it buggers your system royally.
that being done, download system mechanic 4. run as a trial, you can safely use every option except one. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, TOUCH THE FIND DUPLICATE FILES OPTION. Leave it alone. Dude, if you have to ask in this forum, you dont want to mess with duplicate files. Most of them are necessary to operate windows and other programs. Very few are duplicate without being needed. *temp folder is the exception, but that will be cleared under another option*
Be careful with security settings, you dont want to hide your desktop and start menu.
clean and compact your registry, its safe and the files are backed up automatically. (just incase)
this should help.
run the optimized defrag program
you should be good to go at this point

OR...
simply format and clear the entire drive, reinstall a fresh windows 98 and start anew. Don't do this if your mom has files she wants to keep, she'll skin you alive and make a purse and shoes from your hide.

You can't do what?
