I have 1 stick of 512MB PC3500 and and 1 stick 512MB PC2700. When overclocking the computer becomes unstable at 340 FSB. I think it is my 2700 ram causing this.

So, would you rather have:

1.) One stick of 512MB ram overclocked to 370 FSB.

OR

2.) One Gig of ram only overclocked to 340 FSB.

Which would make games run faster/smoother?

Thanks

(PS I can only overclock my FSB up to around 370 becuase my motherboard doesnt have a pci lock.)

Yeah, number 1, the extra FSB would be far more beneficial than the extra RAM, test it for yourself using 3DMark 01.

a7v8x-x could only run 2 banks on PC3200 and 4 banks on PC2700. And, I believe it has auto PCI/AGP lock. The unstable condition mostly caused by using SPD also. Your 1 stick of PC2700 might work as well as 1 stick of PC3200.

@real_cool

Thats true, I forgot about the RAM limitations of the KT400 chipset.

Here is what you can do, if you have trouble getting up to high fsb, bump up your dimm voltage and set down the latency to 3-3-3-8, see if that helps. choice 1 is nice but if you can have 1 and 2, even better.
