Sony Playstation 3 problems

my PS3 doesn't run smoothly anymore it freezes for a spilt second then it picks up where it belongs. for instance if I'm playing a football game and i hike the ball then it freezes for a spilt second then it goes into the quarterback's hands. do i need to purchase a new PS3?
