Subject: Where can I get a (legal) copy of Beos |
Comment: I got a demo disk in the mail a few years ago and have been hooked since. I know that Be has gone out of business, but someone should still be selling the OS somewhere

Reply: (edit)I've seen lots of BeOS boxed packages on eBay (looks like the Gobe packaging), sometimes with The BeOS Bible included. Definitely check it out.

Reply: (edit)You can download a free personal version (legal) from http://www.bebits.com/ with many BeOS applications. Do not ask me any further because I am not BeOS user, I know nothing...

Reply: (edit)I purchased R5 Pro from Mensys. It was inexpensive, and although shipped from the Netherlands, it came very quickly. I got GoBe Productive from PurPlus although they do also sell BeOS R5 Pro. Mike

Reply: (edit)Since commercial products by Be, Inc. are no longer supported or produced, I'd stick with the free version. BeOS PE installs within Windows and is booted via a desktop icon. Since you already have the demo disk and know what BeOS is like, I doubt you'd be happy with just a Windows installation. Well, here's the really good news: Once installed within Windows, it is *very* easy to install onto it's own partition: use the included application, "installer" (More instructions are given on BeTips) to install BeOS onto any partition on any hard drive. Once installed onto it's own partition you can un-install the Windows installation. BeOS Bootman gives you the option of booting Windows or BeOS when you turn on the computer. PE can be updated to version 5.03 from any BeOS download site. Using BeOS PE in this manner is nearly the same thing as the Pro version, according to other forum discussions I've seen. Save your money and spend it on software that isn't "dead." Just my 2c. -Bob

Reply: (edit)I think a company called Purplus.com has or had the Pro edition. I know it does cost money and you can get a free version but the Pro edition is well.. Ok I don't know why I bought it but I like it because it has the PE and the Pro version on it. It also has the PPC version on it and has the developer software and the whole gnu enchilada. And other stuff too.
