Hello, I recently read here that it doesn't make much
sense in buying BeOS unless it is for the PowerPC. I
was wondering what the performance differnece is
between say a 500mhz x86 and a 400mhz G3
(different speeds because the x86 and PPC match
differently)

I can't answer your particular question regarding performance comparisons, but I would like to comment on this:

"I recently read here that it doesn't make much sense in buying BeOS unless it is for the PowerPC."

BeOS runs *great* on Pentium PC hardware. On a Pentium II or Pentium III, BeOS is one of the most responsive and smoothest OSes you can install.

Here's what you ~may~ have been misreading:

If you need BeOS for a PPC, you have to buy the Pro version. If you want to install BeOS on a PC, you can use the PE version that is freely downloadable.

Best Wishes,
Bob

I would think/guss the PPC might be faster but the apps are limited.
