It should be an .exe file. Perhaps you have Windows set to hide extensions. Double-click on it and it will install just like an ordinary application.

Click on the desktop icon, and BeOS should boot. The most common problem at that point is graphic card compatibility.

Post back.

OK let's back up. Exactly what file did you download?

http://www.bebits.com/app/2680

That's where you donloaded from, correct?

I don't know why the Bebits says this file requires BeOS r5; these files ~are~ BeOS r5...

Just to double-check, scroll down to where it says "BeOS R5 Personal Edition for Windows." Click on one of the download links - the file name isn't the same at every link, but it should be something like "beos.exe."

If once it's on your hard drive it only says "beos" that's OK - it means you have "hide extentions for known file types" checked in your Windows Explorer preferences. That won't make any difference.

Click on it to install within Windows.

What happens when you click on the file you downloaded?

You've downloaded the Developer's Tools by mistake. Go back to the same page and download from the section, "BeOS R5 Personal Edition for Windows."

After you have BeOS installed, you can add the developer tools if you want.

Best Luck,
Bob
