Comment:
I just started using Haiku as a VM in VMware Server under Ubuntu and, despite being the smallest OS I ever worked with (100 MB), it's not too bad. However, I have a problem with my internet connection. My network card is Intel 82801DB Pro/100 and here are some features of my system as it stands: 1) I cannot ping the usual/normal addresses 2) But, I CAN ping local host (127.0.0.1) and the OS IP (192.168.1.4) 3) I can neither ping the router (192.168.1.254) nor the subnet mask (255.255.255.0) 4) However, if I type ifconfig in a terminal, it tells me the device /dev/net/ipro1000/0 is up and gives addresses for IP, Broadcast and Mask. 5) The Network Status icon on the desktop shows a green light and if I click it, it gives the same addresses I mentioned in 4) above. Also I can use ifconfig /dev/net/ipro1000/0 up/down to change the light from green to orange and back.
One thing I don't understand is that if I go to Deskbar>Preferences>Network and change the Mode to DHCP, once I shut this down and open it again, the Mode has gone back to Static. Note that my router is not setup for a static IP.
All-in-all, many things indicate that I should have an internet connection, but yet I cannot ping (other than local host and OS IP). Can anybody help me resolve this? Thanks Paul
Thanks for the reply. I hope you noticed that it's HAIKU (rather than BeOS) that I'm using (as you never actually mentioned the name Haiku in yr reply). I got the Haiku VM from here
Actually, as it's updated everyday, I should maybe try a more up-to-date version as mine is 3 days old now.
I really do think there's no connection here as it's not just a problem with PING but WGET doesn't work either and I get this error: "............failed: Temporary failure in name resolution." (FYI, I'm using the OpenDNS addresses and these show up in /etc/resolv.conf so it's very unlikely that these have failed).
I have set all of the inputs in the Haiku Network preferences box -- none are left blank. However, after filling in all of the required addresses I change from Static to DHCP but, as you say, there's no Save button. So, if I shut the Network Preferences box down and open it immediately, the DHCP setting has changed back to Static.
Nevertheless, reading through the forums, many people do have an internet connection in Haiku so the problem is not universal but seems to be specific to my setup.
Seems that the VM I downloaded might not be the same. I could get it to ping my router but wouldn't allow dns. I was using vmplayer on bridged. I should have been able to get nat to work.
I have built hundreds of beos machines. I have only played a bit with the haiku-os images, never a vm image. I always use a raw image and use it under qemu.
I'll play with it tomorrow maybe.
Not even a text browser that I could find.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.
Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the latest snapshot today (probably the same one as you 24008) and started it in VMware Server. This time internet was connected OOTB. Annoyingly though, I couldn't get anything other than 800x600 screen resolution whereas on the one where I couldn't get a full internet connection, I had no problem with 1280x1024 resolution. Then I decided to try the super-pack (23934 Feb 17th). Unfortunately, once again, no internet but perfect 1280x1024. Oh well, it is pre-alpha
@jefro Well, I think I finally figured out what was the problem here. It seems, on my computer anyway, that the network must be set up as Bridged rather than Nat. Any that I tried that had a Nat setting didn't give an internet connection. But, it took no more than changing this setting to Bridged and everything was fine. So, now I can use the Haiku super-pack with internet AND a 1280x1024 resolution. You had mentioned earlier that Nat was required rather than Bridged whereas I found the opposite. Haiku starting to look very, very good now. The only thing I don't like is the Opera 3.26 (I use Opera in everything) which is very clunky. Prefer Links for browsing. Thanks for your help.
Firefox is included in the Haikuware Superpack now but there are still plenty of bugs so it still might not work super well. If you want to help out you could always submit the bugs to http://dev.haiku-os.org/ :)
