Is this BeOS related.

If it isn't BeOS related, then this posted message is irrelevant to this forum.

The same folks wrote it, the networking's the same, there's some relevance I think. But I like Be better... using it on an old DEC dual processor 200, and it flies. I just tossed a NextStep manual, in fact. The CD's been gone for years.

Either go with Be or try eComstation, has a Logical Volume Manager,JFS, runs a ton of apps. kind of $$$ though--350 bucks

Still cheaper than M$!

Yup, you can't download it off the net. You couldn't even create an iso even if you had the cd.. its an alien cd format so just buy it! I did.. http://www.blackholeinc.com or bid for it on ebay.. which will probably be cheaper but maybe incomplete... good luck.

ps: even after u get it.. you will most likely fail to install it. it is not compatible with today's hardware. it has proprietory cdrom drivers from the old quad speed / 4x generation. you will need to get your hands on a used adaptec 2940U or 2940UW.

this is a rare chipset that is NOT the same as the 2940AU on the store that is shipping today. adaptec marketing is sneaky to call their new product 2940U on the box.. but it doesn't work with NeXTSTEP because the chipset is actually 2940AU.. a different breed indeed my friend... beware of the evils of marketing!!!!!!

once u get your hands on that scsi card you will succeed. because you can connect today's high speed 40x and up scsi cdrom to the legacy RARE 2940U or 2940UW.

YOU WILL NEVER GET IT WORKING ON TODAY'S ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM... NEVER!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE SPENT SEVERAL MONTHS TRYING MANY DIFFERENT BRANDS... Stick with the HCL when it comes to exotic legacy Operating Systems.

One last tip. Nvidia has obviously taken over and soon all video cards with be Nvidia based.. So far, no open source driver developer has yet to write a NeXTSTEP driver based on Nvidia TNT / Geforce X family. But there is hope.

Before apple abandoned NeXTSTEP on Intel (disenfranchised hehehehe) they did release new generation of agp drivers based on ATI and Matrox video cards.. My opinion is to go for the ATI ones... Apple took down the support site for NeXT in 2001, so you'll have to go to other sites to get this rare driver for ATI Rage family.

Hopefully opensource will save the day and write new video drivers for tomorrows geforce family after Nvidia takes over the world.. who knows...

hey, computing.net doesn't have a nextstep section.. so, by posting here in the "disenfranchised beos user group" maybe they will create a nextstep/openstep section.. hehehehe.. i know i can't spell!!heheheheh

as far as beos.. we are screwed... Opera won't be porting the last beos release (Opera 4 for BeIA) to BeOS 5... too bad..

Mozilla is to much of a GIANT red dinosaur to run on such a small footprint OS.

maybe someone can just rip out the javascript engine from mozilla (monkey whatever) and write it as a plug in for netpositive.. who knows...

Hey, where is Amiga link for the new AmigaOS 3.9 released recently? hehehehe!

bye!

It is possible to install NeXTSTEP on a machine that only has a atapi cdrom. the trick is to use the Beta driver diskette. Use the second (2) choice. Which is a driver for an adaptec 1542b I think. I'm sure of the #2 choice though. If you go to the apple web site it will have better instructions. I know it works because I have a machine running it now.

Rob,

U R da MaN! To help any other legacy NeXT freaks out there, here is the URL for the files:

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/MultiCountry/Enterprise/nextstep/floppyimages/

Now that we can install NeXT on new hardware, here's the next question. Who would dare port Mozilla to Objective C? Any cocoa coo coos out there?... without a browser, that fancy NeXT box is as good as a piece of fancy furniture for display purposes only...

Isn't there an older version of Netscape for NeXT machines floating around somewhere?

"Mozilla is to much of a GIANT

Err . . . ahem . . .

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.0/mozilla-i586-pc-beos-1.0.zip

There, if you're running BeOS, you can use
that URL to download the recent Mozilla 1.0,
and browse the web with that giant red dino!
