Reply: (edit)I can only say about Windows 98 - haven't used XP yet: The PE (free) version of BeOS is meant to install *within* Windows - it boots via a desktop icon. This means you can run BeOS without creating a hard drive partition or installing a bootmanger. However, once installed within Windows it can be reinstalled onto it's own partition and booted at startup with the BeOS Bootman program. Nice things about BeOS: *easy to browse filesystem *some software included *good selection of Freeware available, including arcade games *fast and smooth *many online sources of information and help I'd definitely recommend trying the PE version within Windows to begin with and see how you like it. You'd not be investing any money and just a little time. The PE version and Freeware are available from the BeBits website, a great resource. Best Wishes, Bob

Reply: (edit)yes and sort of to the first question. You may not be able to boot from the BeOS boot manager to windowsxp because xp has put a file in the boot loader area that is needed I think. You can use windows' boot loader though or use a floppy disk. The floppy boot isn't that bad and it boots faster from floppy than XP does from hard disk. Check with Frizbe.net for hardware and Bebits.com for the BeOS personal editon. You will need a fat partition with about 700 meg free. Otherwise you can purchase a pro version from purplus.com and others. I am sure BeOS is better in many ways to any other system. If you were to find a copy of the beos bible you would learn much more. I find it just a fun thing to play with. With Gobe's productive suite you can really get rid of your windows for good.

Reply: (edit)(a) BeOS doesn't _need_ any FAT partition. (b) BeOS doesn't _need_ to run from an image file. Once you have booted BeOS, you can create a partition, make it type EBh, and then use Installer (it's all included in BeOS 5 PE) to clone everything to the partition (as small as 256 MB or so, and as large as you want, basically). So you don't need to be constrained by the supposed 512 MB limit, and it doesn't need to be in an image file in a FAT partition. If you copy it to a partition, you'll need some kind of bootloader, but it comes with that. Reply: (edit)Hey, the guy is a newbie. Lets get him on a first install and then a dedicated BeOS machine later maybe? a. why would you try to confuse the guy? b. why only 256m? that is too small for anything. He would just have to redo it later. c. When I said "you will need" I meant that I was suggesting that he install in a fat partition instead of an XP NTFS5 partition which I have yet to find anyone who can get a PE image.be file to work on. I never said you must have a fat file or the world will blow up into a trillion tiny pieces. d. did you read the rest of the help? Get pro get beos bible get gobe e. HEY, I believe you, why would you lie about that? Just trying to get the guy going first.
