Hi, I have a Athlon pc. My machine keeps on rebooting if I try to install BeOS 5 Pro.

If possible I am looking for a way to install BeOS 5 Pro without removing my harddisk.

Is this the way? Download+burn a bootable CD (or floppy?), start the system with that one and then run the 5 Pro installation? Guess not, because the 5 pro still is not fixed then.

I understood that:
- before patching your system you should get the latest update (5.03).
- in my search I found postings which mention an update 5.04. Does this exist?
- i read about an updated networking, tcp/ip module for BeOS which works better, how about that?

If 5 Pro is installed I want to put together a install cd with 5 Pro + drivers I need(nvidia, Sis900).

A lot of questions. Bottom line: I want to get 5 Pro installed with the latest/smartests/necesary updates/patches. So if you have any additions/suggestions, you are very welcome.

Thanks a lot, Erik

Check the BeOS supported hardware list at Frizbe.com - I think there are incompatibilties with Athlon processors. You may want to try BeOS Max, a free PE distro that contains the latest drivers and patches.

Best Luck,
Bob

The problem you have is that you are using a AthlonXP, all AthlonXP and newer Duron(1GHz+) CPUs are based on a newer revision of the K7-core called the palomino which has integrated support for Intel SSE-instructions. This should be good for us as BeOS R5 has native support for SSE. Unfortunately AMD made the palominos identify themselves as Intel-CPUs so when BeOS tries to call the CPU the Intel-way, it crashes during boot the way you described above. The simplest way to get it working is to buy an older AMD-CPU, for example a Thunderbird. There are other ways to get it to boot but that requires patching or manually hacking the kernel.

Read also this thread at begroovy, it's long but explains indepth what is wrong and how to make it work.

Good luck
