I'm trying like hell to find out the correct initailzation string for my modem (Lucent Win Modem) I've got all the set up done I can boot to BeOS but cannot connect to the net, I can get the modem to dial and hand shake but no connection at all

Bob, I've got a Lucent s--- Modem too...
Hate it. Win Modems, Software Modems, and Soft modems make me sick. I've tried a lot of things to get it to do anything in BeOS, even dial at all. Have you tried something just like ATZ for the modem? What are your settings in BeOS? If I can at least get mine to dial that would be good.

Chris
I'm not sure if it makes any difference but I got the latest Win drivers (not sure if the WinModem has a flashable BIOS) but maybe that would help yet get the hand shake going.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, where'd you get the drivers? I don't think that those modems are high enough quality to have a flashable BIOS - they run off of software, remember, they have very little hardware and firmware.
So they run in Windows, but it's hell getting them to work in anything other than Windows.

The problem is, guys, is that a WinModem requires partial software emulation of that hardware found on a normal hardware modem. That software is written specifically for Windows, hence the name WinModem. If someone hasn't ported that portion of the software (literally, the drivers) to BeOS, the modem simply won't work.
I know, it sucks, I've got a WinModem too.

The proble as discribe is the fact that the modem is a software win modem designed fo4r windows.
You may find the following strings may help
but dont hold your breath
AT&F-v90=1
AT&F-v90=0
AT&f+S38=1
AT&F+S38=0Hope it helps

I recently had the IDENTICAL problem.
The folks that set me up with this cheap little
modem knew just how to fix it. As I recall, it
had to do with the IRQ being set higher than 7,
and they reset it somehow to IRQ3. It took him
about 2 minutes to make it all work fine.Unfortunately, I did not catch all the details,
but this might get you pointed the right way.

i have a lucent winmodem ( works fine ) the prob could be your isp uses chap like BT
if this is the case it wont work

well, i have a LC modem too....just got it with my new 1.4 AMD AThalon proccessor with windows xp. Nothing wrong with mine, seems to work very well, especially connection to cable/dsl modems. On most occasions with dsl/cable, the modem will go around 10 to 30k.b.s a second!!! very impressive. Altough i have added alot of strings to the modem and the computer to the point to where it is at the highes of super tweak. Well i hope ya have better luck. Peace.
