Hi,
I use the following:
- AMD Duron 1300 MHz - 1024 megs of RAM - 2x20 gig hard drives - Pixelview Geforce3 Ti 200 - Realtek Ethernet NIC - DVD-ROM - CD-RW - Soundblaster Live! 5.1
=> BeOS install time: 7.6 minutes, I boot in 7 seconds, no problems ever since.
But: I would like to use my usb scanner (HP 2200c), my printer (HP Laserjet 4L) and if at all possible, sync my Sharp Zaurus with some PIM on the machine as well - that works with an USB network connection, www.trolltech.com developed the pim software included - does only run on win and linnux, though.
You will need to know which type of USB controller chip you have. R5 supports UHCI and the 5.1 has drivers for OHCI. There is an app on bebits I think that supports scanners and one that supports inkjets. Maybe the laserjet will support inkjet commands? I thought I saw the Zaurus also somewhere but will look further. Would the laser support pcl3 commands?
thanks for the help. I don't know whether my motherboard supports OHCI or UHCI (product specs page from manufacturer doesn't help either), but I suspect that it does support both, because it's quite new (K7S5A from Elitegroup).
The app on Be is called BeSANE, but it doesn't support my hp scanner 2200c (not even listed), other models from hp are "under development".
I have found the inkjet driver, but I don't know whether my laserjet supports those commands, but I will tryout for sure. I don't know whether my laserjet supports pcl3 commands - how do I find out?
OK, I studied on that a bit. What I can tell is that you can use something called ghostscript to print to pdf aware printers. I think check on bebits and try the postscript and ghostscript search for apps. If not then try a different forum and maybe someone there might know more than me. (haha anyone actually) Try osnews or begroovy? Smart people there too.
I think under devices you would see some sort of info on your usb if it were seen by the OS. That assumes that you have it enabled in bios (I did say bios).
Just because your scanner isn't listed you ought to try it. Most of the scanners are made by the same people anyway.
My HP Laserjet 1200 runs fine on BeOS 5 Pro, when it is connected to the first parallel port. BeOS automatically provided a working driver, something such as "HP Laserjet-compatible" I have no idea whether the printer would have been so easily configured if I had connected it via usb.
(My only problem is that I have to have the printer connected to the second parallel port, and BeOS doesn't seem to want to see it there!)
