Grey Screen of Death

Ever since I installed OpenTracker 5.15 and then rebooted my BeOS Pro 5.03 install, it now does the following:-

BeOS boot screen loads up and all icons become active like normal.

Then it gets to a grey screen and that's as far as it gets.

Now I've tried all the safe mode settings and various combination with no joy.

All I want it to preserve my data. So, I installed a fresh copy of BeOS PE on my XP partition to see if I could access it, however, everytime that OT mounted my BeOS Pro BFS it would crash. If I boot into safe mode of PE it works fine but as soon as I mount the drive - it locks up.

So, I tried installed a new BeOS 5 Pro copy on my drive to see if I could get my info, with no success. Same as above.

This is my last resort, I feel I've lost all my BeOS work and files (and yes no backups)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A note of correction: OpenTracker is currently distributed as version 2.5.

In your situation, I would not go any further to do anything drastic.

What you can do for safe measure is to restore the three original files: Tracker, Deskbar, and libtracker.so. You can still mount the CD and recover those files and restart. Both Tracker and Deskbar can be found in /boot/beos/system/. Libtracker.so can be found in the subdirectory lib. All three files are located in the same place on the CD as well as on the hard drive.

When you do copy the original three files over the defunct ones, you'll get the prompt to "Do It", hold down the CTRL key in order to perform the action.
