Hi everyone.
Unfortunately, my IDE Plextor 16x10x40 CDRW drive died, 5 months past the end of its warranty. (boohoo) So now, I must ask, what should I get as a good, inexpensive, decent, BeOS compatible burner as a replacement? It would also be nice if it were Linux compatible, but not necessary. I only NEED it to be able to burn in BeOS. Having read through the Frizbe.net hardware page http://www.frizbe.net/hardware/info.php?product=1137&category=26&sub=4 , I am thinking about getting the LITEON 40X12X48CDR-CDRW, but would like some opinions, experiences and recommendations.

Thanks,
Cliff

I bought one from a place because it came with nero 5.5. I think a similar one is still for sale about $50. They are all made by only a few companies so just because it has a name it may not be so. There are some reports of DVD working but that is much more money. Since BeOS uses cdrecord that is ported from unix then any modern cdrw ought to work in beos and linux.? Better check though.

I wish that were true. My Plextor 16x10x40 would only work as a CD drive & not a burner under BeOS. I never tried under Linux and only ever used it under (don't think TOO poorly of me) Windoze. I bought the Plextor burner at a computer show, not having researched its compatibility with BeOS, thinking that a Plextor would be supported. I was mistaken. My old Phillips 2x8 CD-R drive (not CD-RW) is also not BeOS compatable (other than as just a CD drive). As for DVD, my Samsung 16X plays movies quite well, and is only very slightly choppy, almost unnoticable.

So ... any suggestions as to a good BeOS compatable burner that isn't going to break the bank?

Cliff

Well, I can say that I bought an Artec from tigerdirect just because it had the nero program. It is the company that makes ricoh I suspect.
Maybe something else is going on. All Plexor cdrw's at frizbe.net are reported to work. Each has fully supported ratings.

The only other thing I can say is mine had a fit with cheap slower CDR's and RW's. After I bought the high speed ones it rocked. I almost gave up on CDR's since RW's can be used so many times.

Good luck.
Wonder if there is a way to run beos off a CD at the store and try out drives?
