Subject: Different speed cpus in MPS?

Comment: I have a Abit bp6 motherboard with one celeron 466Mhz and one 533Mhz installed. I have both BeOS 5 PRO and Dano installed and both is running fine under singel processor mode but not in dual. In PRO the system locks after 10-30 seconds. A peculiar thing is that the clock in both OS uptime and the regular clock in the deskbar laggs and stops and then goes to fast and so on. In Dano the system is soooo sluggish. I can move the mouse pointer a bit and then the system stops for 20 seconds or so and the I can move the pointer a bit again or maybe open a program and then the systems stops. My guess is that the problems are connected tothe fact that I am using cpu's of different speeds. Ive tried to disable hlt commands and other alternatives in the kernel settings file but with no luck. It works perfectly under windows 2000 though. Help me! :|

Reply: (edit)The only thing I don't understand is how it can be working under 2000? Anyway, all I have ever heard about dual processors is that they be, not just the same but, they must be made for a MP setup. Some have to be a matched set bought at the same time. You would have to reseach the chip numbers to tell. There are ways to cheat some specs but I don't think you can cheat the MP specs. My only guess is that 2000 didn't load the second processor?

Reply: (edit)No, 2000 has loaded both processors. Its running fine in dual mode with different speed cpu's. At least with celerons and a bp6 motherboard. Some years ago I used the same motherboard but then with a 400 and a 466 and it worked like a charm. I've tried to change MPS version control for os but with no luck. I've even switched places of the cpu's so that the slow one is processor 1, no luck there either. :(

Reply: (edit)I figured this one out my self. It Can even happen with only one CPU. The main problem is not being about to run the HLT command. Windows NT, 2000 and up send the HLT command every free cycle the get (this cools the cpu). What you need to do is add more system cooling and if you can find one use a program like Rain or Waterfall Pro (for windows 9x). For Linux or BSD you my try a newer kernel. Alot of the newer ones have the ability to send the HLT command (trust me it makes a huge difference and with out is makes a systems stability extreimly random)
