I read the posts about the DHCP trouble and i'm in the same situation. I cann't get a static ip cause they don't give them and I can't put in my own ip cause they have started blocking it. the third party dhcp client link is dead. searched all over.

Thanks,
Michael

Might try bezip.de for some apps. Where was the prior app?

You don't want it anyway. It is for only R3 and below. It is I think included in the R5 or parts of it.
I have not yet had the touble with the dhcp but others have. Might have to get a different ISP.

Yes if only that were possible to get antoher isp:

1) Only ONE cable provider here. (yeah pretty bad)

2) DSL provider started capping at an unreasonable amount but I switched.

You see the pain i'm suffering up in Canada? :)

I think that some have said the ISP may be about to switch your settings.
Can you tell us more about the modem?
Might have to look at the cable modem settings if it can be done. Some get different os going and get the IP address and go back to beos with that IP since it may remain ok for a bit.
Are you sure it isn't dns?

I know its DHCP and BeOS seems a little stupid cause it can't get the ip. Windows and Linux get it fine. I did enter dns manually it does nothing. BTW I got an externel ethernet Terayon Pro.

Guess we ought to start at the beginning.
USB or Ethernet connection? USB won't work.
Do you know the NIC card is working?
Can you ping another computer with beos?
What I have read is that the ip address is limited and you should be able to use the same IP for days and maybe weeks.
How many people in Canada have computers anyway?

Ethernet - no USB in this city!
The NIC card works I tried static settings and the connection worked for 5 seconds
Don't know how to ping in BeOS
The IP lasts very long some have reported years
Are you kidding? So many have computers and it's not cold here in Ottawa, it's actually hot. (side note: they're building a fiber optic link in the north pole for the reasearch centre.)

Well,
It seems to me that you have a few machines around. So I guess that sharing the net pipe is in order. Why not get yourself a cheap broadband router and leave it at that? If you need to ping in BeOS, run Terminal from the Apps cascade menu. Sometimes, you can buy your way out of a problem and save yourself a lot of time and frustration. I did find this post exchange very funny. Thanks guys and gals.

Marcos

I was kidding of course.
I would rather fiddle with something spending thousands of dollars just to save 10 cents. Don't listen to those who offer easy ways around things. Keep going.

If you think the static IP is working for a few seconds at least then try to use the application "Terminal". It is a bash shell that one used posix and some dos commands to do command line testing like "ping". Try to ping the IP address that your ISP gave for the DNS and see if there is a return.
