Chris,

Is this modem even supported? (I don't remember seeing it on the BeOS Ready Hardware list.)

Check the BeOS Ready Hardware list. If your modem is supported, it'll be on the list. If your modem *isn't* officially supported, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work. You might want to check BeBits.com for third party drivers.

If your modem is a "real", actual hardware modem, you'll have no problem. Just use a standard, generic modem driver. If your modem is a controllerless "WinModem", HSP (Host Signal Processing), or some other type of software-based modem, you might want to consider sending it to the scrap heap. (I do know people who have reported no problems at all using certain U.S. Robotics and 3Com WinModems, but these people are only using Windows and don't do that much with their computers.) If you have a real hardware modem, it'll work with anything.

PCI modems are almost always software-based, usually lacking a controller (sometimes they don't even have a real data pump!). To my knowledge, there are only two models of PCI modem that are real modems; one is made by U.S. Robotics/3Com and the other was made by Global Village. I'd bet a large sum that your modem is a WinModem.

The Conexant modem is based on the Rockwell chipset. It comes in HSF and HCH flavors (controller and soft), though even the HCF is a "Windows" modem. A generous BEoS tech has written a updated "modem pick" file that includes at least a dozen generic Rockwell (Conexant) modem choices @ bebits.com. I still can't get mine to work because it won't open the serial port.
