High, friends. Did anyone of you try to compile any program from unix/linux for BeOS? Is it possible? What is needed for this? I have mainly Openoffice.org on my mind, you surely know why... Thanks
BeOS is not a Unix/Linux operating system or clone.
Some Linux apps have been ported to BeOS because they required only simple modification. But from what I've read, OpenOffice would require extensive re-writing. There was a project to do just that, but it seems to have been abandoned.
The closest thing to an office suite for BeOS was Gobe Productive. Newer versions of Productive are for Windows only, but older BeOS versions can sometimes be found on eBay. There's a free Productive demo that can be downloaded from BeBits.
Bob is right. The lib's and other building source code also has to be ported to BeOS. Anyone who can do that amount of coding is much better off building a native application. That way the app will work with the power of beos. A sourceforge project might be better way to go on such an easy project. The examples for a word processor and office suite are there. Just need to code it to the beos api.
