Hello,
I need some help.I just recently installed BeOS. And it looks good! However I can't get my 3Com/USR 5610B modem to work, Or I should say I can't get BeOS to find a COM port 5. How does one enable BeOS to show com port 5. I've had it list 4, but no 5! I feel certain that this modem will work in BeOS. It works for Mandrake and 98. I've even downloaded the third party drivers from FrizBe. Its that COM port "5" thing I can't get past.
What else should I be doing. Thanks

That is mainly for PCI modems but has links to ISA.

You can't get BeOS to find a serial port designated as COM5 because that configuration isn't supported.

Under BeOS, modem serial ports should be set up as one of the standard serial port configrations: COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4. (You should probably follow this as a rule of thumb anyway for maximum compatbility regardless of the operating system.)

Early on, BeOS supported modems on COM1 *only*. I don't think this changed until R5. Even with R5, COM port settings other than COM1 and COM2 can be problematic on some systems.

Set your modem to COM1 or COM2 (with the appropriate corresponding IRQ and I/O port address configuration) and you shouldn't have a problem.

CORRECTION: Early on, BeOS did *not* support modems on COM1. In fact, until R5, BeOS didn't support modems on COM1 or COM2. Up through R4.5, BeOS only supported modems on COM3 and COM4. (For modems set to COM3, you'd use Serial 1; for modems set to COM 4, you'd select Serial 2.) This changed with R5.

Modem configuration for BeOS 4.5 is quite well documented in Scott Hacker's The BeOS Bible; unfortunately, it isn't quite so well documented for R5. At any rate, it should not be difficult at all to get any standard hardware-based modem working with BeOS if you stick to standard legacy configurations (meaning no COM ports above COM4). You might have to play around just a bit.

So far, I've configured BeOS Pro 5.0.3 to use a modem on five different systems (each with a different model of modem) and not run into a problem yet, so I know from experience that it can work.

Good luck with the modem and sorry for the misinformation!

Thank You both. With that I should be able to resolve it. Oh, Merry Christmas.
