Well I've got a BeOs driver from CMedia's website, expanded the tarball and run "Make install". All I get is some cryptic error messages that lead me to assume that "make" isn't functional under the freebie version?
i.e. "makefile-engine not found".

There don't seem to be any libraries either. Will the "Developers Tools" I've just downloaded put all the necessary bits into place or am I destined for a quiet life?

With the DevTools, you have to expand then to "/boot", it will then put everything in the right place. Generaly, for compiling stuff you wan't to be in the right directory ("cd /directory_name") then;
./configure
./make
./make test
./make install

Should do the trick.
