Can't shutdown or reboot (beeps)

Another poster (Jez) asked a similar question a few months ago. In both cases the symptoms are the same: the computer freezes with one long beep follows by two short ones. BTW, it doesn't happen in safe-mode.

Choose any or a few of the safemode options. If you find only one that cures it then there is a script file I think called kernel.sample (something like that) to make boot options permanant. See betips.net for the exact file and usage.
