Comment:

I have BeOS PE 5 and I can't close the Application Clock from my desktop.

When i first launched it i saw a small arrow like something on the bottom left side of the Clock. When I dragged it The clock became two. For fun I did this for several times and got bunch of clocks on my desktop. But then only i realized that i can't close these things.

can Anyone help me to close clean junk?

You've created replicants. They live on even after the application/parent process that spawned them has been killed.

For more information about replicants under BeOS Personal Edition, consult the accompanying documentation. It pretty much explains it all.

To show or hide replicants, click on the Be menu and choose Show Replicants or Hide Replicants.

To remove a replicant, drag it to the Trash.

Or... If the replicant is showing, right click the replicant handle and choose Delete.

See--it's simpler than you think. I was often tripped up the first time I started using BeOS 'cause I was always assuming things were much more complicated than they actually are. (Being conditioned by years of PC-DOS, TOS, OS/2, various UNIX-ish platforms, and occassionally that godawful Windows stuff, it's little wonder.)

By the way, if you launch an application that supports replicants, create a replicant of that application, and then delete the application that spawned the replicant, the replicant becomes a zombie. You can still delete it at will, but it won't continue to work 'cause the parent application has been deleted.

The Tracker stores replicants in a file called tracker_shelf. Here's the path:

/boot/home/config/settings/Tracker/tracker_shelf

In the unlikely event that one or more replicants get really screwed up, just delete this file.

But I can't drag them. And there's no menu after a right click.

Show/Hide Replicants on Be menu doesn't work.

There's nothing in tracker.

I moved the file:
"/boot/home/config/settings/Tracker/tracker_shelf" to the trash and rebooted, and now my desktop isn't loading (I only see the hand mouse icon on a blank screen) and I can't even see a terminal window that I opened using my spicekey - I see that the terminal and everything else are running in the team monitor - is there any way to recover from this?????

I was able to restore the the tracker_shelf file back from the trash by mounting the partition after launching a back-up of the image.be file (with a floppy).

After rebooting again from the partition with the restored and corrupted "tracker_shelf" file, I again moved it to the trash. Then, I played around and added and removed some replicants onto the desktop; then I killed and restarted the Tracker - this process removed the "unmoveable" clock.

But then when I goto reboot again from the partition, my desktop isn't loading again.

I guess I'll have to go back to the corrupted "tracker_shelf" file and live with the "unmoveable" clock, unless you have some better advice....

Ok - everything's fixed: Use the "Restart the Desktop" button in the team monitor (ctrl+alt+del) after killing the Tracker. Thus, restarting the tracker wasn't enough to save the needed changes.

I used the tip: http://www.betips.net/chunga.php?ID=43

*Franco Martinez (PalmaServ@topmich.com) adds the following:

BeOS 5 PE Users (who lack the CD) can remove bad replicants by doing the following;

1) Running a search for the (tracker_shelf) file, once found the file can be deleted right from the search results window.

2) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up TaskManager and kill the Tracker itself.

3) Once the Tracker is dead and your desktop disapears, press the "Restart the Desktop) button in TaskManager and your desktop will return WITHOUT any replicants.

You can also just use repliman from http://www.bebits.com/app/2300 or http://www.kumo.it/BeOS/repliman.html to delete replicants that don't have the little handle anymore...
