I am going to buy a industrial strenth external dial up modem. I need it to run for:

Linux
Unix
BeOS
Dos/Windows

I am looking to spend up to $200, but it has to be external, and dial-up. Anybody have any suggestions?

I would suggest a US Robotics, but any external 56K 9-pin or 25-pin Serial should work fine. I had some old Wang (yes that was the name of the modem) 14.4K Faxmodem and it never gave me any crap, fired right up and never did anything wrong. I wouldn't expect to pay $200 for a modem though.
Here's something that will help:
DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM DON'T GET A WIN MODEM OR SOFTWARE MODEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I've made my point.
Those modems suck so much it's not even funny. The hardware is worth less then the software needed to run it - winmodems and software modems have almost no ROM and run off of software drivers, so they will run almost only in Windows. It IS sort of possible to get some to run in other OSes. But they reduce your system to crap while they're running.

Industrial strength?

Well, 3Com or US Robotics (whichever) makes Courier type modem. Visit 3Com to find out more. The Courier has everything you can ask for an external modem.

DON'T BUY A WINMODEM OR A SOFTWARE MODEM!
External Can be a pain but it will always work stay away from USB and if you want a Internal Buy one with a Lucent Chipset they run very good and are probably the most compatible chipset on the market for internal modems, they never give me crap stable and rarely need driver out of the box, the best part of all you can pick one up for 11 bucks
