According to the official Be Software, Inc. BeOS® Ready List™, which was last updated on March 27, 2000 at 15:55 UTC, there is no support for USB devices at all in BeOS 5. I came to this conclusion from clicking on the link on the page http://www.be.com/support/guides/beosreadylist_intel.html that points to "BeOS Compatible USB Devices", only to discover that the link didn't work. On closer inspection, however, I noticed buried within this analytically structured document three lines under the "Motherboard" selection which seemed to indicate that BeOS™ does have support for some USB devices, such as keyboards, mice, and (wow !) PRINTERS, as long as the devices themselves are BeOS compatible. So it looks like your Ethernet network is going to have to be run in some other operating system, fortunately. But don't blame BeOS™ just yet. Remember, USB technology is only 4 1/2 years old, and they need some time to catch up with the other major OS's that DO have USB Support, such as Windows, Linux, MacOS, NT, BSD, Plan 9, Aqua, CeOS, Darwin, DeOS, CP/M, LynxOS, EEVIOS, BIOS, CamiOS, WamiOS, FreeDOS, KerberOS, etc. etc. Sometime this decade they might catch on, and then you can go right ahead and hook up that Ethernet card ! I say, "BeOS all the way !"

Yeah, and how many of those OSes have a significant support/user base (for example a board on computing.net)?
Plan 9, CeOS, DeOS, CP/M, LynxOS, EEVIOS, BIOS, CamiOS, WamiOS, FreeDOS, KerberOS drop from the list.
And x86 compatability?
Darwin, MacOS, and Aqua fall.
And are free?
Windows and NT/2000 feel sick.
And can be set up on weird hardware in under a month?
Linux and *BSD/UNIX hide in a corner.
And that seems to leave...
BeOS!
OK... where's a good place to look for wacky and 100% unsupported drivers?
