Subject: BeOS on a G3 iMac?OS: BeOS Pro 5.0.3CPU/Ram: G3 333/128meg |
Comment: I saw some photos on Google of an iMac running BeOS. I'm sure this was a specifically tailored installation for show purposes, but does anyone know if there is an iMac version installation image available? I just picked up a G3 333 iMac for $75 and think it would be fun to play with Be on it. I'm sure there isn't any easy way to install this, but I just thought I'd ask. Thanks!! Cliff

Reply: (edit)Frizbe in one bedrives under the frizbe logo. There is some info on the zeta site. They claim that the motherboard won't support the code even though the processor will. The only way would be to run virtual pc.

Reply: (edit)No *easy* way...in order for BeOS to be able to run on a G3 processor mac, Be Inc. needed very specific details about the (then brand new) processor , however, Apple declined the request. There is, therefore, absolutely *no* way to run BeOS on a G3. Or is there... ? Apparently if you have a G3 Processor upgrade card on an old-world PowerMac., BeOS will run ok... Same with the newest versions of virtual PC... My version of VPC is, alas , 4x, which does *not* run BeOS, but apparently support for it finally (if belatedly) arrived in the newest versions.. so either spend a couple hundred $ for a copy of VPC, or a couple hundred for a G3 upgrade card used, and find an old 604e to fit it on.. Alas without VPC your iMac won't run it, but hey..for 75$ ! If you keep that streak going maybe you'll find a copy of VPC 6 for 25$ !! %00

Reply: (edit)If you have an early PowerMac or clone with 1- PCI slots 2- a 603 or 604 processor you should be able to run BeOS with a few exceptions. If you have a PowerMac or clone with CPU on a daughtercard you can upgrade to a G3 or G4 daughtercard and it will work. I run several that way and they are fast and stable. There are sometimes problems with caches, but these are easily fixed. Some good info is available here: http://www.beforever.com/www.be.com/support/guides/beosreadylist_ppc.html The same page is available from beatjapan.org but I don't have the exact url handy now.
