OS: BEOS Max v3
CPU/Ram: Athlon 1.4ghz/768mb pc210
Comment:

I am trying to install BEOS max v3.0 that i downloaded from bebits. However I keep getting a cache error during the install. I left it running last night, when I woke up there was a white dos looking box(debug screen?) that said there was some sort of cache install error?

Anyone see something like this?

I used nero to burn the iso with the max cue file. Thanks.

More info, installing to a 4gig partition empty at the moment.

using 1024 block size.

Dont know what else you may need to know. I wish i remembered the exact error.

A few things. For some reason I think there is a limit to the format size in Max. The newer dano based format can handle much larger disks. I think it was just a bug in the format. Try a 1 gig partition first.
Second, there is a problem with memory with beos. Some systems with larger video cards and ram over (as low as) 256m might collide the memory region. They made a ram limiting boot floppy that solves that.
I'd try the smaller partiton first.

Thanks for the quick response. Can I ask you another question? What is Dano?
I've read people saying Zeta is not really BeOS is that just people spouting off or is it not have the same multithreaded code etc..,.?

I might just buy Zeta which supports all the newer hardware. Might make my life easier.

Thanks. Ill try to resize the partition.

Stop! I was wrong on the limit size.
Try the ram limiting boot floppy at bebits dot com.
I checked on that and I was wrong. The max partiton seems to be 60G in regular beos (max) You would only need the mkbfs file if you went near that limit or above..

Well, Zeta is beos mostly. They sell maybe the most current version known. The only other choice was offered on beshare called Phosphuros. The guy quit working on it and is supposed to be working with the new opensourced beos haiku.

Most people can get the free os's working as with some help. The newest MAX can run as a live CD too. Seems that you didn't get that far or version.

I have nothing for or against Zeta, seems that many beos users have an opinion. See purplus dot com for Zeta. Might call them and see if they will honor/offer a $10 off coupon that they had sent out.

I really need to get a small qemu image setup so people can just download a folder and run it from an icon in an emulation.

Beos works well in vmware and virtual pc. The virtual pc is free for 45 days so if you want to try another download. I finally ended up paying for it to save on burned CD's.

Well i tried it before you said stop. Guess what at this very moment i am writing this in BeOS!

Dont know if it was the fact that I made the partition 1 gig or if i changed the block size to 2048. Either way this OS is awesome. Do you know how fast this thing boots.

Wow very impressive.

Reminds me of the old OS 9 for MAC. Oh except that it doesn't suck. If you ever had to troubleshoot or provide support for OS 9 you'd understand.

Thanks for the help.

Ill probably end up deleting the partition trying bigger partition with bigger block size. But for now Im having to much fun.

There are plenty of tips that help to speed up the boot out there. Anyway good luck!
