OS: BeOS Pro 5.0
CPU/Ram: PowerCenter 150
Comment:

Hello, and thanks for any/all replies. I recently obtained a PowerCenter 150 Mac clone ($7 at a rummage sale), and ordered BeOS Pro 5.0 from Purplus ($20-ish).

Unfortunately I don't have a clue how to install BeOS on a PowerPC. Does anyone know of step-by-step online instructions?

The CD doesn't seem to be bootable; I can't find a PPC/BeOS boot floppy; the text file install_beos_pro is blank; etc.

The computer is currently running Mac OS9. I've tried installing BeOS with OS9 and empty space at the end of the drive, and I've tried installing BeOS stand-alone.

The computer is supported by BeOS, according to online compatibiity lists. In fact, I believe many of the PowerComputing machines actually had BeOS and Mac pre-installed and dual-booting.

Any ideas at all? It's quite frustrating...

Dunno why I think this but don't you have to use the MacOS to install beos? Might ask on beshare. There are a few PPC guys that know for sure. Might try begroovy too.

I've found out a few things since originally posting. Some or all of this you probably knew, Jefro.
1) You can't install PPC BeOS without a Macinstosh operating system to run the installer.
2) It has to be Mac OS 8.6 or earlier; the installer and/or the Boot Chooser extention is not compatible with Mac OS9 or later
3) Luckily my PPC-clone computer ~is~ compatible; PowerPC computers slightly newer or slightly older are not compatible with BeOS.
4) It's a real ass-pain, and I'm currently trying to hunt down a Mac OS 8.xx CD, but haven't yet.

This is all suprising to me. I've been following BeOS news for years and always thought BeOS was originally a PPC-centric OS. It's not...

Thanks for reading. I hope someone in the future searching the forums can use this info. I'll post back when I either get it to work or when I give up.

I run several older PowerMacs with G3 upgrades in them also. A G4 will work, but Altivec won't so it's no real advantage.

Hello,
I thought that BeOs was not compatible with G3s or G4s....
If you install a G3 upgrade to a machine originally
compatible with BeOs, will it work?
Thanks
