It should work just fine. What that means is you can't use one of the ways to boot into BeOS. That way is from an app while in Win/me.
1.You can still make a BeOS boot disk.
2.You can still install bootman.
3.You can make a bootable CD.
4.You can make a WinME resucue disk and put two files on it. Loadbeos.com and zbeos. When you boot into the rescue disk at the dos prompt type the command loadbeos.com and it should boot.
5. You can even make a bootable zipdrive or other bootable (bios supported)device with makebootfloppy options.

I installed BeOS 5 free version on ME
and it does actually work but you must use a BeOS Boot disk (option) it gives you when you are installing it to start it up because ME is not able to drop from windows into dos.
make a boot disk then put the disk into the floppy drive and reboot the machine.

or if You use a win98 boot disk put it in the disk drive and when the setup menu comes up press
the
shift button & the F5 button at the same time to give a command prompt then type a: and then push enter, this is called a command prompt type the following
c:\Beos\loadbeos.com
should work like a charm!
