BeOS Bootup Hassle

Original Message

Subject: BeOS Bootup Hassle
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Intel P4 1.8 - 256 Ram
Comment:
I'm running windows xp on a P4 1.8ghz machine with 256 ram and a geforce 2 mx. After I install BeOS Personal Edition 5, i make the boot disk as it asks. But then, when i click the icon and try to reboot into BeOS from windows XP, i make it to the screen where it says BeOS and there are 7 or so circles with little pictures inside. It makes it to the second picture and then it just halts there forever. My floppy drive stops making noises as soon as it gets to the second circle and then it just halts there and i have to turn off my machine and go back to windows. I tried some stuff in the menu that you get by pushing spacebar at the "loading...." screen, but it still stops at that second circle. Any ideas or insight at all would be appreciated.

Check the hardware compatibility list at Frizbe.net. You may need to download additional drivers and/or patches to use BeOS on your computer.

I'm almost sure you have to have a patch for the Pentium 4. Also, I don't know if PE can be booted from within XP - you may have to install BeOS on it's own partition.

You should look into the unofficial BeOS release, BeOS Max. It's a CD created from BeSO PE that is installed onto a dedicated partition and contains patches and drivers for newer hardware.

With a quick investigation, I was able to find two things relevent to your situation:

First, yes you need a patch to use BeOS at all on a Pentium 4.

Second, you cannot boot BeOS PE directly from Windows XP (or Me, or 2000, or...). You have to create a boot floppy.

These tips, plus loads of other info can be found at BeTips.net.

The easiest way for you to run BeOS will be to download Max and install BeOS onto it's own partition. Max contains the P4 patch you need, and having a dual-boot system will eliminate the need to boot BeOS from within XP.

Keep in mind that Be Inc. has been officially liquidated and BeOS PE was released years ago. This explains why you are having compatibilty issues.

Best Luck,
Bob
