Any way i can get my usb mouse working
on my PPC install, anyone..i can't even
find 'devices' in preferences...is this a
particularly ppc version thing or ???.
It'd be nice to have any USB on the Be
side of the Mac......even if just to have a
better mouse than those horrible apple
ADB ones...
Frankly, i'm finding the ppc beos
depressing..i mean, it runs so really well,
and yet i cant even find a single
alternative web browser for it (never mind
other apps) ..even the net positive 3.0
beta wasn't compiled for PPC..but i
woulda thought USB would be supported,
wasn't it a standard already by R5 ?..
So, anyone?
Thanxly muchly...

I agree. Be Inc kept beos going on mac stuff for a while. They didn't have the specs to really keep it up to date. I too would have thought that usb was supported. Other posts claim that very few if any usb stuff is supported on mac. The original R5 specs on mac say nothing about usb. Do a search for ohci or uhci and see if any exists. That would be the only two drivers for that time. In x86 they only supported uhci until R5.1

Um... No USB was not a "standard", it was still fluctuating. Apple didn't support USB until the iMac, so none of the original G3's (AFAIK) had it, let alone the pre g3's supported by BeOS.

The thing you also have to remember is that MacOS didn't support USB till MacOS 8.5 or 8.6... baring in mind that 8.1/8.1 was the version released when BeOS R5 was.

There was never a USB stack on PPC for this reason (to be honest, this is a blessing because the R5 intel USB stack is buggy as hell, and only supports one of the two major USB standards - not the most common one on cheaper mobo's too!)

IIRC Apple eventually went with OHCI as UHCI was partly owned/influenced by intel. BeOS R5 didn't support OHCI, even if USB existed on Mac's.

The final point is that in 2000, USB was very small. It wasn't till the iMac was released that USB really kicked off. I suspect BONE, the MediaKit 2 and OpenGL were probably more pressing until the focus shift. After the focus shift, PPC pretty much stopped being worked on completely. Sad but true!

When do you think the iMac came out?
By 2000 all macs had been USB capable for some time- the iMac came out in '98, and both USB G3's and G4's were already out by 2000...and even though OS 8.1 didn't support USB normally, it did so on the first iMacs...by standard, in any case , i meant pretty much Wintel..as USB was first supported on that platform in '96 with '95B..so by 2000, which is when my R503 PPC was released, it pretty much was a standard, as it was a normal feature on every comnputer sold at the time...Apple couldn't have set the standard for it anyways, as they really had been holding out for a decade hoping for firewire to become it instead (tho they didn't incorporate FW in their hardware until years after they'd invented it, either)...
This is exactly why i was perplexed that a cutting-edge OS like BeOS didn't support it on PPC ..and poorly on x86 (i couldn't seem to get my USB mouse working on intel either...)
