Hi everyone! Ok, I built a new system this weekend with an AMD XP1700 processor. My question is: How the [CENSORED] do I get my OS installed from the 5.0 Pro CD onto a new hard drive that has not been formatted in fat32 and no other OS on it?? This is going to be a BeOS only machine, and I have spent most of the weekend running in circles (rebooting over & over). How do I use the XP kernel patch on a machine with no other OS? The patch I have found is a .exe to be run under DOS and converts the image.be file on a freshly installed PE that has never been booted. Can anyone help? Thanks, Cliff

BeOS Pro was never intended to run on an AMD processor. And I can't think of a way to install Pro with the driver you need onto a blank hard drive. However, there are solutions. The easiest might be to download and install BeOS MaxEdition. While I haven't tried it, it is a bootable install CD and I think it has the driver you need. Or you can install BeOS onto a different computer and create your own bootable CD with the driver(s) you need. The instructions for creating a bootable CD can be found at betips and driver information can be found easily at BeDrivers. Or you could install Windows temporarily, install the BeOS driver, then remove Windows... Good Luck, Bob

I took care of the problem today & it boots nicely on the AMD XP1700 processor. I took out the new hard drive, put it in my old AMD K6-2 500MHz box and installed BeOS Pro 5 from the CD. After the OS was running, I opened the file "kernel_intel" with Diskprobe, did a search for "GenuineIntel", found the 2nd entry of it and changed it to "AuthenticAMD" (no quotes). I found the instructions for this procedure here: http://wiki.bebits.com/page/InstallingOnAthlonXPorMP After I saved the changes, I rebooted and just like magic, it booted right into BeOS as it should! The only odd thing that I can find is when you click the "About" it shows CPU: (unknown) running at 1475MHz, instead of any type of AMD processor. Bob - thanks for helping! One more thing for anyone else trying this: If you install Pro5 from CD, do the updates to 5.0.3 *BEFORE* you edit the kernel_intel file. I found out the hard way and after making the updates, I had to go back and re-edit the file. Aparently, the updates replace existing information in the file with new information. This undoes the change you made in order to make it boot on the XP processor and you once again get stuck in the infinate rebooting loop. I hope this helps. Cliff

Glad you got it working. But it seems to me that if the Max version had the driver you need, that would have been easier than swapping hard drives and manually editing configuration files. :)

Cliff, I put a link to a downloadable floppy that would have gotten you going on the wiki page. Otherwise you could have made it yourself from a patched system. Use the makebootfloppy -cd option after the kernel file was patched. It puts the kernel file on the boot floppy. Goofy login now has me locked out half the time.

Hi, I am in the same situation. A Athlon, a 5 Pro cd and a continiously rebooting pc. If possible I am looking for a way to get going without removing my harddisk. Is this the way? Download+burn a bootable CD (or floppy?), start the system with that one and then run the 5 Pro installation? Guess not, because the 5 pro still is not fixed then. I understood that: - before patching your system you should get the latest update (5.03). - in my search I found postings which mention an update 5.04. Does this exist? - i read about an updated networking, tcp/ip module for BeOS which works better, how about that? If 5 Pro is installed I want to put together a install cd with 5 Pro + drivers I need(nvidia, Sis900). Well a lot of questions. Bottom line: I want to get 5 Pro installed with the latest/smartests/necesary updates/patches. So if you have any additions/suggestions, you are very welcome. Thanks a lot, Erik
