Well it depends... If the modem is supported then you should see a serial port available that is not one of the built in ports (i.e. if you have com1 and com2 enabled on your motherboard then the modem may show up as serial 3). If your modem is a hardware modem it should work fine. If its a Winmodem then you might have a problem. There are only two winmodem chipsets supported. You may find this page helpful...

Most likely since it's a winModem, you'll have to select
"Pre-Configured Modem", and specify the settings
manually. You might also try looking in your Preferences/
Devices and seeing if the modem shows up or not.

There is no proxy software for BeOS at this point, but
there IS a NAT server that will allow your BeOS box to
redirect traffic from your LAN to the internet,
automatically.

NAT also allows you to take port numbers and redirect
them to individual machines, as needed. This is just -
like- a proxy server, but not as fully featured.

What is it you wanted to do exactly with a proxy for
BeOS?

To change the network settings, go to Preferences/
Network, and put in an example hostname, DHCP, or
specified IP address for your machine, for each network
card in your machine. We'll need more information of
course to further direct you, so please reply with as
much information as possible about what it is you wish to
do, and your hardware configuration, including external
hardware and other machines.

The more information, the better.
